Stephaníe de Man is an independent graphic designer based in Rotterdam - The Netherlands. She has a special love for research and book design, typography, books and nature. She talks to No.Zines about the design process of her project for Ubu Books.

"The design for an extensive collection of avant-garde poetry, literature, images and music from the 'Ethnopoetics’ category at UbuWeb. Each poem, text, image and sound work is published separately, in a way that enhances the individual character of the work. These publications collectively form the Ubu Books collection. Each publication’s design conveys the work’s ‘roots’ using a system of abstract meshing patterns on the back cover. The many publications have no specific numbering order. One book, the mother catalogue, has a blank back cover. This contains the legend with which all the meshing patterns, and thus the ‘roots’ of the works, can be deciphered. All Ubu Books publications are hand-bound, printed in black on ecologically friendly white paper".
