INTERVIEWS, WRITING ON ART, NEW MUSIC, HISTORY AND POLITICS http://nozines.com/contenido/2012.02/white-fungus-interviews-writing-on-art-new-music-history-and-politics.asp Fri, 10 Feb 2012 00:00:00 GMT White Fungus is an art magazine based in Taichung City, Taiwan. Founded by brothers Ron and Mark Hanson in Wellington, in 2004, as a quasi political manifesto, copies of the first issue were produced on a photocopier, wrapped in Christmas paper and hurled anonymously through the entrances of businesses throughout the city. The name of the publication comes from a can of “white fungus” the Hansons found in their local supermarket in the industrial zone of Taichung City, Taiwan in 2003. Each cover of White Fungus is derived from a scan of the can. Dispersed through the internet and inter-disciplinary art events, White Fungus is as much an experiment in distribution and dissemination as it is in art publishing. The 12th issue of White Fungus is 162 pages of concentrated art. It includes an in-depth interview with Carolee Schneemann, accompanied by artworks spanning her career. It has interviews with the Taipei artist Yao Jui-chung, Beijing noise artist Yan Jun and New York composer Annea Lockwood, discussing her composition ‘In Our Name’, built around excerpts of poetry written by prisoners while incarcerated without trial at Guantanamo Bay. The issue features a history article about nuclear testing in the Pacific leading up to the Rainbow Warrior bombing by the French Government. There are articles on the artists Chen Chieh-jen (Taipei), Simon Denny (Berlin) and Tao Wells (Nelson), and the New York composers Pauline Oliveros and David First, plus a history of Taiwanese electronic music by Jeph Lo. There are paintings by Robin Williams, profiles of the Brooklyn artist-run space Cinders and the independent Taiwan gallery Z, and poems by Jumah al Dossari, Anne Fiero and Colin James. There is a review of Tiqqun’s This is Not a Program and Introduction to Civil War, recently republished by Semiotex(e), new commissioned comics by Tim Bollinger and Barry Linton, plus an article, ‘Anarchy and Art’, by Richard Livermore, which challenges evolutionary models of thinking and orthodox Marxist revolutionary thought. Also it comes with a CD including live recordings of the New Zealand artists Our Love Will Destroy the World (Campbell Kneale) and David Watson with Sean Meehan from an event White Fungus held in 2010 in New York at the gallery P.P.O.W. -- White Fungus Roberto V. BRINK. BETWEEN ART AND SCIENCE http://nozines.com/contenido/2012.02/brink-between-art-and-science.asp Mon, 06 Feb 2012 00:00:00 GMT brink is a new bi-annual magazine founded by four students of the History of Art and Communication Design from Bochum, Essen and Wuppertal (Germany). The magazine between art and science generates a space where cooperation and coexistence are expressed in their difference — art and science encounter each other as differentials and in this encounter open up for the other at once. As a single-topic magazine each issue offers various perspectives through contributions by students, young and renowned artists, junior researchers and established professors from all sciences as well as personalities from the media and culture. That is where the opening of brink takes place: Constantly demonstrating the potential of the differentials. Yet, this opening does not anticipate brink‘s existence. brink is not already there but in a continuing process of becoming by the encounter with its readers. brink is rooted in the silence at the universities, in the lack of opportunities to see and speak for oneself and in the missing or failed dialogues between art and science. It is a project run by students who felt the urge to create a new place for discourses and their visibility and they have opened it up with brink Magazin zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft. brink: the place where art and science encounter each other. Margins, liminal experiences, setting and transgression of boundaries in the encounter with the other. -- brink Roberto V. JUNK JET. AN IRREGULAR LÖ-FI PAPER PUBLICATION http://nozines.com/contenido/2012.02/junk-jet-an-irregular-fi-paper-publication.asp Wed, 01 Feb 2012 00:00:00 GMT Junk Jet is a zine-jet, a collaborative format set up to discuss speculative works on topics of architectures, media, aesthetics, and on electronics. It is an irregular lö-fi paper publication (including irrational special gifts) on a non-cömmercial scale edited by Asli Serbest and Mona Mahall (m-a-u-s-e-r) and published by their own igmade.edition. Junk Jet is interested in counter works (and counter counter works) of counter aesthetics, tunnelling practices that show lack of any irony or fiction. It is about wild forms and found objects, about weird theories and (small) narratives, anti-fashions and non-styles, about exploring do-it-yourself works, accidental outcomes, deviant and normal aesthetic forms that result from jammed common practices, misused media, and subverted customary tools. It is about cultivating an anti heart by “introducing noise to signal”. Whereas n°1 experiments with the topic of failure, or better: noise, n°2 is especially into architectural and spatial works. The n°3 flux us! flux you! issue focuses on temporary types, on stable happenings and unstable thoughts: boogie buildings, rolling rocks, flying architectures, provisory pyramids, lifted cellars and dug in landmarks, curtains, mobiles, house boats, bubbles, zeppelins, flying saucers... The n°4 deals with making something out of nothing and contains works that move from mumbo-jumbo to real magic and back. The current issue n°5 -comes with a Poster: "Home Buttons by Architects"- is an archive impossible that transports, in print format, net based works, or fragments of works showing collections, series, animations, applications, and reflecting anti-heart texts on the net and its new forms of art, design, and architecture. N°5, the net.heart issue, has transferred internet things from their digital space into a paper jet. This transportation procedure relies on documents in a similar way as the museum relies on photograph and video documenting performance arts. And Junk Jet believes that this analogue documentation is in no way inferior to pseudo-preserving techniques of data migration, emulation, or reprogramming. At the end, Junk Jet says: "Transportation is not so much about the artwork as object, but rather about the indication of the subjective decision of the artist." In this sense Junk Jet is a Russian conceptualist. NEVER ODD OR EVEN: A TEXT-SPACED EXHIBITION http://nozines.com/contenido/2012.01/never-odd-or-even-text-space-exhibition.asp Thu, 12 Jan 2012 00:00:00 GMT Never Odd or Even - an exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde - presents word-sculptures, word-images, wall texts, "write-along" animation films, mindmaps, etc. The art works focus on the written word's ability to activate an inner imaginative world, and engage in an architectural interaction with the museum spaces. The title suggests doubts, but is also a pun – a palindrome, which can be read both backwards and forwards. Puns as well as the audience's ability to complete the content of works are at stake. Never Odd or Even is based on the Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball's art project with the same title, and the project is included in the exhibition. Deball’s Never Odd or Even is both a performance and a book consisting of 30 fictional book covers for unwritten books created by various authors and illustrators. The first edition of the book was made in 2005, but for the exhibitions in Berlin and Roskilde a brand new version has been published by BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE. RUINÉ. A MIRROR OF A NEW ZEITGEIST http://nozines.com/contenido/2012.01/ruine-mirror-of-new-zeitgeist.asp Thu, 05 Jan 2012 00:00:00 GMT ruiné magazin is an independent publication of german editors and publishers Neven Allgeier & Benedikt Fischer, combining photography, text, art and overall aesthetics to a powerful ensemble with a statement. Concept of ruiné is to express a new zeitgeist, assuming man being on the way to the inevitable point zero. In the ruiné universe, evidence can be found everywhere from the smallest neglibilities to the grand existential things. It is very important for them to be a platform for different artists, established, aspiring or yet undiscovered, dealing with the vision of ruiné from their very own perspective, thereby steady expanding the ruiné cosmos. The third issue of ruiné examines how architecture and the new digitality reflect and correspond to the self-alienation of man. On 104 full color pages, the ruinéboys Benedikt Fischer and Neven Allgeier along with many other artists show their view on our environment and the digital future of our world. Among the contributors, swiss artist Beni Bischof shows digitally manipulated images of buildings and sculptures, depriving them of their immanent purpose and questioning the worth of human accomplishments. Chicago-based artist Bea Fremderman, curator of the city's kunsthalle new, and canadian award-winner Geoffrey-Pugen also deal with the influence of virutal worlds to our lives and minds. Thomas Mueller, computer prophet of the new millenium, supportingly describes the development towards technological singularity, while different artists attach their views and visions to the ruiné cosmos by contributing artworks to accompany the infamous ruiné messages further exploring the thematic triangle. Cast into a radically reduced form, ruiné 3 itself appears as a cohesive piece of art, providing visionary approach to the world and the life of tomorrow. -- ruiné Roberto V. FOUR CORNERS BOOK. NO ORDER. ART IN A POST-FORDIST SOCIETY http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.12/no-order-art-in-post-fordist-society.asp Mon, 12 Dec 2011 00:00:00 GMT No Order. Art in a Post-Fordist Society is a research, production and publication machine based in Milan, employing different tools to impact, the social, semiotic and economical assemblages within the contemporary cultural industry. It focuses on the relationships between contemporary art systems and capitalism's productions processes. It appears as an annual magazine edited by Marco Scotini. In the first issue of the magazine contributions (essays, articles, interviews and dialogues as well as artists' projects) aim to deconstruct, analyse and intervene within the ambit of the procedures and forms of cognitive capitalism. It will concentrate, in particular, on the phenomena of the 'biennalisation', 'financialisation' and 'spectacularisation' of the political, beginning with the control and distribution of forms of artistic education, production and display on a global scale.   It consists in three sections: Time Zone, Play Time, and Time Machine. The cartographies in Time Zone trace out emerging artistic 'systems', geographies of governmental disparities, and different dynamics of cultural work. What is at stake here is the position that these local systems are adopting in the globalised system of contemporary art. This section focuses on the way the role of cultural industries is affecting various economic scenarios around the world. Time Zone is quite simply a rewriting of the opening section of art magazines – that of news and appointments. In this issue: Russia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Croatia and Turkey. Play Time corresponds instead to the central section of an art magazine, which is generally dedicated to monographic essays on particular artists. Categories like 'author' and 'work' are concepts that belong to a particular historical period—that of the modern age—but they are no longer able to analyse and portray the processes of contemporary production. Deconstructing the hyper-visibility of certain organisations and giving visibility to the invisible networks and processes that permeate the space of art, in a collective chain of Education/Market/Display, thus becomes the only possible form of action in today's state of 'work'. The section Time Machine aims to complete the issue by questioning the position of time at the heart of capitalism, but no longer in its 'modern' form, which based the production process on the contrast between use value and exchange value, and thus, by extension, on the dialectic between reality and representation. On the contrary, time—which is based on potential/actual relationships—is now the basis for the information economy. At a time when appearance has entirely replaced reality, the subject is always a 'power', insofar as it is memory, on the point of manifesting itself. The last section of art magazines is given over to art reviews, and the category it deals with is always the time dimension of 'after'. -- No Order Roberto V. SLANTED. TYPOGRAPHY AND DESIGN http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.12/slanted-typography-and-design.asp Wed, 07 Dec 2011 00:00:00 GMT Slanted.de is a weblog that has typography and design as its topic. It informs its readers about international design trends and events day by day in numerous categories and is always in tune with the zeitgeist of design and typography. The typography magazine Slanted,  complementing the weblog, is published quarterly and combines the sectors typography, layout, illustration and photography. It attends to the topics in greater detail and more intensive. Both blog and magazine encourage and call for a debate on these subjects as an experimental field. The new issue (#16 - Bold/Light) deals with the loud and the silent, the eye-catching and the inconspicuous. "BOLD is the opposite of despondent. In typography it is a popular method of accentuation. LIGHT is the opposite of noisy and bigmouthed. For this theme of contrasts we initially had more loud and bold fonts, works and pictures in mind than quiet, restrained ones. We are impressed of a time – striking and epic in its occurrences – which rushes past and carries us off. The soft overtones only get little attention at this rapid speed.  So, how can we pause, set the LIGHT against the BOLD? The fluid, cinematic moment of presentation has an exceptional meaning for us also in this issue. We are bothered about a linear concept of narration. The rhythmic comparison encourages to stay and immerse. Creative decisions and the use of typography for this compilation were stretched far to specific borders, to underline the topic and to work out the character of the two extremes. This precipitates also in the production: By the use of different, metallic Chromolux papers and a two-colored finishing, issue #16 appears with six different covers. Furthermore a haptic surprise awaits the reader in the inner part.  We are glad having the chance to present two photo series, which interpret the terms BOLD and LIGHT on a special, distinctive way: The historical photography of the propably most significant heavyweight champion of all times, Muhammad Ali (UPI/Bettmann/Corbis), as well as a critical photographical counterdraft to the “soft-washed” and alleged airy aesthetics of David Hamilton, created by Mareike Foecking (Düsseldorf).  We feature type essays by Jean François Porchez (Clarmart), Horst Wöhrle (Esslingen), Reinhard Albers (Constanz) and Nanna Funke (Münster), furthermore interviews with Ian Party (Lausanne), Ludwig Übele (Berlin), Eric Gill, Michael Horsham (London), Doug Wilson (Springfield), Raffinerie AG für Gestaltung (Zurich), Jost Hochuli (St. Gall), Thomas Lupo (Weissach) and Mareike Foecking (Düsseldorf), as well as reports by Michael Schmidt (Munich), Ian Lynam (Tokyo) and a musical travel report by Frank Wiedemann (Berlin)." Hot Gun! issue#2 makes you feel you are presented with i) a selection of poems by Timothy Thornton, Nour Mobarak, The Rejection Group, Francesca Lisette, John Wilkinson, Alexander Nemser, Jonty Tiplady, Luke Roberts and Justin Katko; and ii) a section of work on and by Edward Dorn, including essays by Reitha Pattison, John Armstrong, Kyle Waugh and Richard Owens; two unpublished poems by Dorn, "The Poem of Dedication" and "Osawatomie", with notes by Justin Katko; and Dorn's introductory note to The Book of Daniel Drew as well as an uncollected poem, "To Tom Pickard & the Newcastle Brown Beer Revolutionaries". And to you, at last, remember the cost of experience. All law is an application of an equal measure to different people who are in fact not alike, are not equal to one another. That is why the "equal right" is a violation of equality and an injustice. It is 5pm and we are not here to build the perfect state, mounted as a system by which one group oppresses another. Which costs the world that is desire. Across his work, Dorn's writing is a struggle to keep the language of desire, not pure but free from the corruptions it will suffer when a community is stupefied by the power of others. The work on Dorn presented in this issue of Hot Gun! focuses on Dorn's anti-capitalism, emphasizing the materialist and political aspects of Dorn's writing, which are linked to a highly concentrated metaphysical discourse. -- Hot Gun! It is created by Andy McMillan, Carolyn Wood, and Jez Burrows. The Manual recognize, along with you, that web design is a distinct discipline, its roots firmly in graphic design yet now adding its own principles, tools, and visual language. You won’t find markup and code, tutorials, and galleries inside these pages. Rather, it archives the insights of some of the best thinkers and writers in our field as they explore and define this serious discipline and more effectively tell the story of our work. Every issue features six brilliant authors who each present a substantial article in addition to a personal essay. A talented illustrator is assigned to each article to create a stunning work to reflect the meaning of the author’s message. -- The Manual Roberto V. EDICIONES HUNGRIA. PORT MAGAZINE | SQLWDSELECTSQLWDED STUDENTS' WORKS FROM BAUHAUS UNIVERSITY WEIMAR http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.09/port-magazine--SQLWDselectSQLWDed-students-works-from-bauhaus-university-weimar.asp Tue, 06 Sep 2011 00:00:00 GMT PORT Magazine is released annually by students from Bauhaus University Weimar. It exhibits selected students’ works from varios fields, such as architecture, product design, visual communication, media arts, fine arts, media science, a.s.o. This year’s issue focuses on the paths of development and the problems occuring on those paths and how the students solved or circumvent them. That’s why the subtitle is »UmWege«, which translates as detours. Detours complicate the progress – they cost time, often money and effort. One accepts detours when experimenting, leaving beaten tracks and discover new ways. That experimental approach is what PORT Magazine wants to present. The selected works are, apart from their quality, persuasive, because they dared to raise new questions and take new paths both conceptually and technically. The realisation of the magazine, which appears more to be a catalogue, reflects the detour in a explorative way. A japanese binding is used to separate the process from the result. The reader flips through the pages seeing only pictures from the procedures. To explore the results, profound texts and interviews the pages need to be torn open at the perforation in the fold. Furthermore all presented projects should be considered as equal. That’s why their are 25 different orders and 25 different covers. -- PORT Magazine Roberto V. The magazine-app, featuring 80 minutes of video content, includes reports, interviews, documentaries and music videos. For fans of the traditional print format, Astronaut is presented in a classic editorial design with expressive photography and clear typography which can be expanded on several interactive levels on the iPad. Users will find text to read, photos to admire and arrange, and videos to watch. There are also some photo series that are not obvious at first glance and astute users are rewarded with pleasant little surprises upon their discovery. This combination of text and video creates an inspiring work that takes users on a voyage to the stars. Astronaut offers a place for independent filmmakers to present their documentaries and other projects that were achieved in their spare time often with minimal technical support or outside help. Up and coming music acts and photographers are profiled, artists and fashion designers are shown in their studios and people who are creating new disciplines are introduced. The user has a front row seat for all of this and gets to know these protagonists on an almost personal level. The use of film gives the viewer a deeper level of insight. I´VE ZINE THE DARKNESS | RADICALIZING POSITIONS ON ART http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.06/i-ve-zine-the-darkness--radicalizing-positions-on-art.asp Sun, 05 Jun 2011 00:00:00 GMT Last Friday 3rd of june the exhibition “I’ve Zine the Darkness” was opened in dieschönestadt gallery Halle. This exhibition explores artzines and their aesthetic and political dimension, when looked at as motivation for self-publishing and their production process as do-it-yourself or low-budget products. Artzines go beyond the established business or perception of art. They radicalize positions on art in many ways by creating hopes and expressing critique and are themselves intersections of actual artistic practice. “Artzines fight an indefatigable battle against the aesthetic gleichschaltung, they created an epic scene around the arts and struggle for the attention of the awoken. Aesthetic and culturally traditional work-processes are being (re-)thought by self-publishers and Zinsters or critically embraced or commented by the more established. They provide evidence of the world’s scrap and the seemingly infinite availability and waste of pictures, they speak of the democratization of knowledge, of revolution and the empowerment of the individuals and their wonderful insolence to take what is theirs. They sparkle and shine aurally, they are the light above the abyss we have to face from time to time.”  Franziska & Moritz -- Artzines Roberto V. NOBROW. CRAFTED AND TACTILE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.05/nobrow-crafted-and-tactile-illustrated-books.asp Mon, 23 May 2011 00:00:00 GMT Nobrow (TM) was set up in the winter of 2008 to provide an independent publishing platform for illustration and the graphic arts that would showcase some of the best talent out there today, whether fresh out of college or from the ranks of well seasoned veterans. Their aim is to place a renewed focus on quality in print, using wherever possible the best materials we can get our hands on and always trying to play with format, color, size and design to ensure that our publications are well conceived and individual. They work closely with locally based printers wherever possible so that we can be involved in the creative process from start to finish and we always try to achieve finished products that are not only filled with great work, but that themselves are art objects, to be coveted, collected and cherished. Nobrow Small Press vs. Nobrow Press Nobrow Press is all about publishing beautifully tactile illustrated books. Their main publishing imprint, Nobrow Press endeavors to push the boundaries of the offset printing process to ensure that colour, format and paper quality combine to produce publications that are not just books, but collectible art objects. Many of their publications are individually numbered and run in editions of between 3000 and 5000 copies, their unique system of printing full spot colour publications gives their books the luxuriant quality of artists’ books albeit at very affordable prices. Nobrow Small Press is all about screenprinting. They have a fully equipped screenprint studio on their premises and work with many different artists, illustrators and designers to create beautifully crafted books and prints. They editions are extremely limited, they never do more than 100 of anything. Everything they produce is signed and numbered by the artist and embossed with the Nobrow Small Press seal. -- Nobrow Roberto V. LOOSE LEAF. It's a hybrid format of publication and limited edition print series. It exists in the form of a collection of unbound and large-format printed art works. Published twice a year, Loose Leaf intends to present images in a physical, livable form, a distinct departure from the online consumption of visual material that pervades our lives. Each edition comes packaged ready to be installed, not stored. Leaves are hole-punched for placement on a wall with small pushpins. Its unbound format allows the viewer to edit, select, and reshuffle images on an ongoing basis. For this first edition, Jeff Canham handpainted a sign that pays tribute to the legendary song ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’. Dwight Eschliman deconstructed a silk gown by fashion designer Louisa Parris. Mark Giglio created a shrine to the (lack of) sun in San Francisco’s notoriously chilly summers. Michelle McCarron ventured into the depths of the Stanford Linear Particle Accelerator. Andrew Zuckerman presented us with an alternate view of San Francisco’s famous architecture. Loose Leaf samples from a specific context, but introduces the new and unexpected. Every edition shifts and centers around a loose idea rather than a definitive theme. Loose Leaf is a collaborative effort. Each edition features newly commissioned works by artists, designers, photographers, illustrators, and writers that have caught the attention of the studio. -- Loose Leaf Editions Roberto V. DEVOTION TO POSTERS http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.04/poster-tribune-devotion-to-posters.asp Mon, 18 Apr 2011 00:00:00 GMT Poster Tribune is a bi-anual newspaper devoted to posters. It contains 12 pages of illustrated articles and 3 posters -65 cm x 96 cm-. Posters are equally artistic creations, communication tools and witnesses to social, commercial and artistic trends from specific periods. Poster Tribune examines such posters and breathes new life into these short-lived street exhibitions. Through these articles, Poster Tribune promotes the international and Swiss Contemporary Graphic Scene, and reports on the poster´s history and latest news. For this first issue -Détournement and Subversion-, Poster Tribune looks into posters that, not content with promoting their specific event, bring a new poetic or offbeat dimension through the skilled use of détournement. The public can relate to these posters because they counter conventional images that we are used to. The détourned poster is based on an analogy or a metaphor of the poster’s focus. The graphic designer chooses to distort an image to give it a totally new function than that which was originally intended. By détourning an image, the focus takes on a new dimension. In a way, it then forms part of the designer’s approach and is no longer merely from the illustrator’s perspective. The subversive poster has neither the same aims nor the same challenges. It focuses on upsetting existing values and deliberately imposing an image that goes against what is expected; without there being the slightest analogy or metaphor. The subversive poster tries to be free and demands pure creativity. It has a Dada style -although it is not often a conscious legacy-, which does away with convention, often playing with extravagance, derision and humour. In some respects, the détourned or subversive poster is a means of giving the item it is promoting a different perspective. It characterises our generation by revisiting and reinterpreting references from other times, styles and contexts. But first and foremost, it is also a way for today’s graphic designer to be an author, poet or designer in an infinite world of abundant images. -- Poster Tribune Roberto V. CONTRAMOTOR. A MEXICAN MAGAZINE ABOUT THE ART WORLD http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.04/contramotor-mexican-magazine-about-the-art-world.asp Sun, 10 Apr 2011 00:00:00 GMT No.Zines likes to support all stuff around self-publishing, do it yourself and freeware license culture. The projects of Mexican Graphic Designer Daniel Castrejón are a good example of this philosophy. Below Daniel Castrejón talks about his latest project CONTRAMOTOR -a printed magazine about photography, literature, art...- and other projects while printed version of CONTRAMOTOR magazine was generating. "CONTRAMOTOR began in the year 2004 covering a variety of contents regarding from visual arts through literature. From its beginning up tomid-2005, it published fifteen online editorials. But it all came to an end when developing an exact periodic publication became boring, such as the thorough labour of finding interesting contents without falling into collective tendencies/associations. Nowadays, CONTRAMOTOR shows itself with a new meaning, a newer version reinventing itself from when it used to be an online publication, when it used to be thought to respond to obvious reasons such as a widespread market through mass media channels, e g., the Internet. In the time being, we don’t give a fuck about the approach any artistic expression might have since it’s available to anyone throughout the world wide web just one click away. That’s the main reason why CONTRAMOTOR has a stubborn and contradictory spirit that decides to give a step back from becoming a print document, with reduced circulating volume, unpredictable periodicity, through obsolete distribution. CONTRAMOTOR’s comeback doesn’t have a meaningful reason or a real justification. It’s just the perennial enthusiasm towards print publications and its media, our loyal appreciation to the Do It Yourself culture, hence our search for impossibility rather than realism or possibilities that might exist. During CONTRAMOTOR's unproductive period, we found an alternate way to enjoy ourselves by keeping ourselves active, so we created the Umor Rex records, trademark that originated two new distinctive labels: Scribble Kite and Dog Ear Records both of them of freeware nature. So we emphatically invite all of you visitors to take a free tour through our label websites while we endure and build our newest version of CONTRAMOTOR. If you are involved in the art world, if you are a photographer, painter, illustrator, writer, etc., and don’t intend to become famous overnight, if you don’t consider yourself a misunderstood talent, if you aren’t tormented by absurdly unknowable questions and you aren’t a trend setter, then we invite you to collaborate with us by sending us your proposals and comments to info@contramotor.com" -- CONTRAMOTOR Umor Rex records Daniel Castrejón Roberto V. BEHIND THE ZINES: SELF-PUBLISHING CULTURE http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.04/behind-the-zines-self-publishing-culture.asp Mon, 04 Apr 2011 00:00:00 GMT A new book of Gestalten Publishing about Self-Publishing Culture is out now. The Zines are self-sufficient, everlasting objects, printed pages that can be turned with your fingers, vehicles for expressing alternatives to mass culture... and perhaps even interactive media, for you can go back to them as often as you like and they are open to different levels of interpretation, creating a personal bond with the reader, offering visual, tactile and olfactory sensations. In many cases, their periodicity is erratic and extended, and some only come out once a year. The Zines operate independently of market demands. They offer a space for freedom and explore the full graphic and artistic potential of the physical format. Twenty-volume folios will never make a revolution. It’s the little pocket pamphlets that are to be feared. —Voltaire Social networks are dominating today‘s headlines, but they are not the only platforms that are radically changing the way we communicate. Creatives such as designers, photographers, artists, researchers, and poets are disseminating information about themselves and their favorite subjects not via predefined media such as Twitter or blogs, but through printed or other self-published projects—so-called zines. Those who publish zines are mostly interested in sole authorship, namely that all components including text, images, layout, typography, production, and distribution are firmly in the hands of one person or a small group. At their best, the results convey a compelling and consistent atmosphere and push against the established creative grain in just the right way. They provoke with surprising and non-linear food for thought. In short, zines are advancing the evolution of today‘s media. With a cutting-edge selection of international examples, Behind the Zines introduces the broad range of zines that exists today. These include zines that function as a new kind of project-oriented portfolio to showcase a self-profile or document an exhibit. While some act as (pseudo) scientific treatises to call the reader‘s attention to a specific topic, others serve as playrooms for creatives to run riot and express themselves and communicate with each other in a space that is free from editorial restrictions. The book examines the key factors that distinguish various zines. It introduces projects in which the printing process significantly influences aesthetics or in which limited distribution to a small, clearly defined target audience becomes part of the overall concept. Behind the Zines not only documents outstanding work, but also shows how the self-image of those who make zines impacts the scene as a whole. Through interviews with people involved in zine production and distribution, the book sheds light on various strategies for this evolving media form. -- Gestalten Roberto V. DE ZINES IN ARANJUEZ. Clip/Stamp/Fold takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period. The book brings together a remarkable range of documents and original research which the project has produced during its continuous travels over the last four years starting with the exhibition at the Storefront in November 2006. The book features transcripts from the “Small Talks” events in which editors and designers were invited to discuss their magazines; a stocktaking of over 100 significant issues that tracks the changing density and progression of the little magazine phenomenon; transcripts of more than forty interviews with magazine editors and designers from all over the world; a selection of magazine facsimiles; and a fold out poster that offers a mosaic image of more than 1,200 covers examined during the research. -- Clip/Stamp/Fold Roberto V. ARCHI ZINES. ARCHITECTURAL MAGAZINES & ZINES http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.02/archi-zines-architectural-magazines--zines.asp Wed, 23 Feb 2011 00:00:00 GMT ARCHI ZINES is a showcase of new fanzines, journals and magazines from around the world that provide an alternative discourse to the established architectural press. Launched by Elias Redstone, with art direction by Folch Studio, the project celebrates and promotes publishing as an arena for architectural commentary, criticism and research, and as a creative platform for new photography, illustration and design. Alternative and independent publishing has had a dynamic and important relationship with architecture over the years, with prolific moments in the 1960s and 1970s. A recent resurgence has seen new titles emerging in many countries, from Argentina, Belgium and Chile to the UK and USA. ARCHI ZINES brings together this international collection of publications for the first time as an important resource for architects, designers, critics, photographers and anyone interested in discussing the buildings and spaces we inhabit. ARCHI ZINES is an expanding archive of the best publications from 2000s to the latest releases, and is growing as new titles and issues are acquired. The publications themselves vary in style (from photocopied zines to professionally printed and bound magazines) and content (from architectural research to personal narratives about buildings and cities). The commonality is a shared interest in documenting and discussing the spaces we occupy in ways that more mainstream or professional publications do not. As well as adding to architectural discourse, they are lovingly made objects to hold and to keep. The first stage of the project is to create an online survey of new architectural publishing. From this collection, publications will be selected to participate in exhibitions and events. A facebook page provides a forum for publications to network and share information. -- ARCHI ZINES Elias Redstone Folch Studio Roberto V. THE VELVET CELL. "I am passionate about urban photography that challenges contemporary and commercial photography aesthetics and I fully believe The Velvet Cell is evidence of this theory." Eanna Freeney The Velvet Cell Books has released its debut publication, a 16 full-colour page booklet, of photographs by Austrian photographer Thomas Albdorf. Albdorf's photos capture a desolate image of Vienna and its surroundings, highlighting the often overlooked beauty of the urban environment. WORD AND EXCHANGES http://nozines.com/contenido/2011.02/drawing-room-confessions-word-and-exchanges.asp Tue, 08 Feb 2011 00:00:00 GMT Drawing Room Confessions is a new printed journal named after a parlour game played by Marcel Proust, the Surrealists and others. It is made of words and exchanges, with no images. Six different sections (The Egoist, The Blind Man, Two to Tango, Ekphrasis, Time Line and La Madeleine) comprise the Rules of the Game, which are the same in each issue. What changes are the players: artist and interviewers who come from a wide range of fields. Each issue focuses on one artist only. The editors, Vincent Honoré and Manuela Ribadeneira, have added footnotes to clarify, complete, or redirect the conversations. The journal is designed by Åbäke and published in conjunction with Mousse Publishing. The first players are Charles Avery and Jason Dodge. What is The Egoist? The Egoist is a conversation with an individual selected by the player. The Egoists in Issues 1 and 2 are the British philosopher Robin Mackay and the American poet Michael Dickman. What is The Blind Man? The Blind Man is an exchange with an interviewer whose identity is concealed from the artist. We can now safely reveal that the Borges scholar Evelyn Fishburn and the viola player Juan Lucas Aisemberg were the Blind Men in Issues #1 and #2. What is Two to Tango? Certain activities cannot be achieved on one’s own. Two to Tango is a warts-and-all conversation with someone selected by the editors, which explores the core processes of creation. The economist and geographer Angus Cameron partnered with Charles, the artist Michael Dean with Jason. What is Ekphrasis? Ekphasis is a Greek scholastic exercise, ‘a verbal representation of a visual representation’. Here it is the artist’s direct intervention into the journal: an image with no image. And the Timeline? It is not a CV. Instead, the player selects the defining moments – personal, historical, and cultural – that have marked how he or she thinks and lives. What is La Madeleine? Each issue ends with the player answering a fixed questionnaire based on the original game of Drawing Room Confessions. -- DRAWING ROOM CONFESSIONS   Roberto V. DE ZINES. Cleverly, this celebration entails a new Art Direction, in Ritxi Ostáriz care, distinguished creative and designer. ladosmag is a free publishing. Following this magazine, we find the exceptional work of José Ungidos, Executive Director, Amparo Fuentes and Javier Mielgo. The street work, in direct contact with the subjects of current interest (especially in Amparo and Javier care), forms and makes sense to ladosmag each issue. We can find ladosmag in Asturias, Castilla-León, Madrid, La Rioja (Central Spain) and Barcelona, Zaragoza and Baleares Islands (Northeast Spain), regardless of the subjects exposed in each issue: "quality and importance news, no matter their location or origin" are the only points of reference as the ladosmag team work emphasize us when been asking about the magazine´s presence and distribution.ladosmag essential aim is "the dissemination of all kinds cultural events (music, fashion, art, design), understanding each of these disciplines as a representation of the different ways of expression, and the intrinsic ability of multiple personalities. We intend to serve as a channel amplifier for maximum information diffusion in different niches, using ladosmag as a transverse tool connects and communicates these different areas -traditionally tight structure. ladosmag needs to break these archaic barriers to reach a larger readership, which sensitivity and respect by virtue of creation is, in itself, an outstanding reference." ladosmag content published by way of interviews, almost always related, as stated above, with the environment of independent music, art, design, fashion or photography. The unity form of this publication. We hope, for the No. 17, to perform also a change in format and type of paper used so far. "The Ritxi Ostáriz's editorial work (simply navigate your website -in front of his digital work, both in web and multimedia animation, above all always exceptional projects), is motivated by a determination of style "simple, elegant, sober, solid." Ritxi has a special devotion to what he calls "eternal projects: those will remain over the years ... It may take 30 years (or 2 or 50) and the digital world is so different from current web sites that cannot be viewed on any computer ... The videos, for example, will be obsolete formats, it´ll be very difficult to play. However magazines, books and, ultimately, the paper will like some aged at most, but perfectly usable. " It seems that History proves it: a few weeks ago I visited the National Library funds, here we witness the life of the paper."Although I came to the editorial environment is so recent", Ritxi tells us, "and considering my professional start in this sector has been almost exclusively in the graphic design and editorial from the world of music, I think they are doing interesting things in national publications. That there is a media as No.Zines is proof that people are very concerned that this not go unnoticed. There are now real gems such as Metal, Apartamento, Tiger, New Papers... What is clear surely is that our daily editorial design is far ahead of what is being done in Europe: France, Germany, Belgium or Nederland."Ritxi Patricia Bosland THE LAST NEWSPAPER. DECONSTRUCTING THE POWER AND POSSIBILITIES OF THE PRESS http://nozines.com/contenido/the-last-newspaper-deconstructing-the-power-and-possibilities-of-the-press.asp Thu, 02 Dec 2010 00:00:00 GMT At the turn of the twentieth century, in the dawn of the machine age, newspapers were everywhere and wire services were feeding their hunger for the latest information. In their rush to embrace the future, the Cubists discovered a rich artistic medium: the newspaper. The Surrealists followed suit, and by World War I newspapers had become an accepted material integrated with painting, collage, and graphic design. Throughout the 1950s, artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns incorporated newspapers into their work not only for the iconic texture of the printed page, but also as a neural charge from the real world. By the 1960s—when this exhibition’s chronology begins—the use of the newspaper in fine art was no longer a novelty; it had become a standard source for both images and language. “The Last Newspaper” is co-curated by Richard Flood and Benjamin Godsill The artists in this exhibition continue the exploration of the newspaper, but their focus lies in the ideological rather than the purely physical properties of the daily press. They use the newspaper as a platform to address issues of hierarchy, attribution, contextualization, and editorial bias. By disassembling and recontextualizing elements of the newspaper, such as the construction of graphics and text, the artists on view take charge of and remake the flow of information that defines our perception of the world. At its simplest, the artistic impulse that largely informs this exhibition is one of reaction and appropriation; the newspaper provides a stimulus and is itself incorporated into the final artwork. In today’s culture, newspapers have to move as quickly as possible to compete with the increasing barrage of information on the internet. In print, it takes twenty-four hours to issue a correction. Online, credibility is rolled out in nanoseconds. People make and share the news in citizen-powered, peer-to-peer structures that can create and destroy consensus in hours. If artists were some of the first to begin to question the structure of the news, we have now reached an epoch where the public as a whole is empowered to police (and become) the press. It is in this context that a selection of collectives and agencies has partnered in this exhibition. If the artwork assembled in the galleries is dedicated to deconstructing the power and possibilities of the press, then the invited participants are engaged in finding new (and perhaps more holistic) ways of describing the world. Four partners are in residence on the museum’s third floor inhabiting a set of flexible offices designed by Blu Dot. Latitudes, the Barcelona-based curatorial office, and a diverse team lead by Joseph Grima and Kazys Varnelis/Netlab, are on site producing weekly newspapers. The Center for Urban Pedagogy and StoryCorps are both prototyping new models for sharing and shaping discourse. Beyond these four residencies, the exhibition is animated by the Philadelphia-based Slought Foundation with kiosks, a reading room, and a discussion area spread throughout the exhibition and dedicated to a reexamination of Emmanuel Kant’s essay “Perpetual Peace.” All the partners seek to wade through tides of information in order to find new ways of making the contemporary world more legible. Their activities are an example of citizen journalism, as well as forums for the examination and structuring of something aspiring to be truth. -- New Museum Roberto V. TURNING PAGES. ABOUT PRINT MEDIA http://nozines.com/contenido/turning-pages-about-print-media.asp Wed, 01 Dec 2010 00:00:00 GMT New publishing trend operates independently of market demands. It offers a space for freedom, promoting a closer bond between creator and reader and exploring the full graphic and artistic potential of the physical format with lovingly arranged layouts and carefully written articles, each one strives to achieve a perfect balance between content and form. Independent publications may be the future of the printed media. In fact, they achieve a remarkable agility in the dissemination of today’s culture thanks to the flexible, democratic way in which they create and share images, ideas and information. Pages characterised by an impeccable editorial design, stages where their creators are free to express their obsessions and passions and fulfil their desire to communicate, to be heard. Turning Pages, new book of Gestalten Publishing, is about it. TURNING PAGES The media industry is in upheaval. New magazines, daily newspapers, and books are being developed, classics are being redesigned, and the interplay between the printed and digital realms is being tested. Against this background, Turning Pages is a perceptive survey of the state-of-the-art magazines, books, and newspapers that are redefining print media today as well as an inspirational forecast of future developments. The book introduces relevant solutions for a print landscape that has been and continues to be changed indelibly by economic challenges and our shifting media preferences. It examines the creative approaches and working methods of designers who are at the forefront of evolving print media in our digital age. Renowned editorial designers not only present their magazine, book, and newspaper projects in striking images, but also comment on the stages of their publication's conceptualization, design, and production. Thus, the book gives readers a step-by-step overview of the editorial process as well as valuable perspectives on how different designers are meeting the challenges of creating outstanding print products for today and the years to come. Turning Pages begins with an introduction by respected magazine expert Andrew Losowsky, who has also contributed texts that explore the essentials of the editorial process. It features interviews and statements from leading and upcoming editorial design talent including Carine Collin, Francesco Franchi, Javier Errea, Kircherburkhardt, Ludovic Balland, Mike Meiré and Omar Sosa. The book examines how magazines such as Apartamento, Domus, Graphic, IL, Monocle and Volt are pushing the envelope of what is state-of-the-art in today's print products; how books have become the hotbed for new editorial concepts and design; and how the New York Times, Piepaper, Stuttgarter Zeitung, The Incidental and others are reinventing news on paper for our digital age. Its unique mix of visual examples, insightful descriptions, and reports based on personal experiences make Turning Pages a compelling reference for anyone currently working as a designer or in the media industry. -- Die Gestalten Roberto V. PULGAR MAGAZINE. MUSAC'S SHOWCASE PROJECT http://nozines.com/contenido/pulgar-magazine-musac-s-showcase-project.asp Wed, 24 Nov 2010 00:00:00 GMT Pulgar is a free magazine published independently in Caracas (Venezuela) and supported by the Prince Claus Fund (Holland). The magazine, edited since 1999 by artist and curator Luís Romero (Venezuela, 1967) defines itself as an 'occasional publication'. This term is a key factor in understanding the magazine's founding concept: a tool for alternative creative dissemination based on the excellence of its published materials. Not complying to a specific periodicity or a luxury status, its clearly defined visual identity responds only to the curatorial rigour demanded of each new issue. With a track record of over 20 issues designed and produced by curators and artists from around the world, Pulgar currently attracts a faithful readership in Latin America, Asia and Europe. The magazine is circulated from hand to hand or on the web. It has also featured at a number of international art events, including special editions for the 12th edition of Documenta Kassel (Germany), the Utópolis exhibition at the Caracas National Art Gallery, the Santa Lucía Evening at Maracaibo (Venezuela) or the Medellín Encounters 2007, MDE07 (Colombia). On the presentation of the Showcase Project and the special issue co-published by MUSAC The site-specific project designed for MUSAC's Showcases is structured around a display reviewing the magazine's evolution from its establishment in the late 20th Century to the present. In parallel, MUSAC will co-publish, along with the Serralves Foundation (Porto) a special issue of the magazine focusing on art publications in Latin America. The show covers Pulgar's history through a representative selection of material that has appeared on its pages. It highlights some of the regular features that have defined Pulgar's approach, such as exchanges between artists, networked productions or the highly rigorous curatorial gazes sustained throughout the magazine's successive issues. The project's opening will include the presentation of a special issue of Pulgar co-published by MUSAC and Serralves. With a print run of 4,000 copies, this new publication shall focus on publishing practice(s) as one of the axes guiding contemporary visual creation in Latin America today. From the vantage point that Pulgar provides, an essay will delve into the growing vitality and interest of the processes and ideas, as well as the sustained creativity that underpin the sphere of publishing in Latin America through a wealth of contributions. This special issue will feature contents provided by a range of contributors and editorial projects including Ácido Surtido (Argentina), Revista Recibo (Brazil), Revista Asterisco (Colombia), Revista Lengua (Dominican Republic) des-bordes (Mexico), or populardelujo (Colombia), amongst others, as well as leading cultural agents connected to the publishing world like Andrew Losowsky, director of Colophon (USA) or David Palacios, who heads projects such as Arte-Porcentual (Venezuela). -- Pulgar MUSAC Roberto V. CREATIVES WORKS AND METHODS OF PRODUCTION http://nozines.com/contenido/patterns-of-creative-aggression-creatives-works-and-methods-of-production.asp Fri, 12 Nov 2010 00:00:00 GMT Patterns of Creative Aggression presents creative works and the people behind them. It looks at methods of production for works either currently in progress or completed. It's a behind-the-scenes look into how the final works are formulated and constructed, peoples' work patterns, their methods of practice, the techniques utilised and explored, and what happens in between. In this issue 3, Kirsten Law speaks with Jason Crombie, editor of Wooooo magazine, about his interview style and publishing projects; Tim Hillier presents two projects undertaken by brothers Andy and Mavie Murphy; British artist Graham Hudson explains the construction process behind his sculptures; Paris/New York-based photographer Justin Guilbert shares his experiences on undertaking a project in Japan; Melbourne-based artists Jen Berean and Pat Foster discuss their work with Kain Picken and Fiona Lau, the collaborative duo behind ffiXXed; and New York-based photographer Moises Saman talks about being on assignment in Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan and El Salvador. This magazine is a response to what people do and how they do it. It aims to present a view of the individuals beyond the works they create. Despite the difficulties surrounding the nature of exposing what is not necessarily intended to be seen, by focusing on individual's stories we can perhaps gain a clearer context to the many situations and influences that lie inherent in the development of such varied creative works. -- Patterns of Creative Aggression   Roberto V. They spread around Paris, Lyon and New York producing zines and photographic publication. They also curate a portfolio based website on wich you can discover a large number of young and talented photographers. In their newest book - limited to 1000 copies, Bruit de Fond (Background Noise) they aim to distance themselves from the basic relationship existing between music and photography, avoiding pictures of gigs, bands or instruments, present pictures that come out of the direct collaboration between noise and photography, taken instinctively and randomly. Pictures of places, moments or people where the notion of noise is perceptible instantly.  Also they present works from people that deal with this theme in a conscious and conceptual way.   This book deals with the notions of high and low definition of an image and encourages people to think about contemporary estheticism through different techniques: film or digital cameras, pictures that were found, screenshots or video samples... Noise in photography can also be revealed by using certain devices to distort digital files or negatives. The image produced then shows new properties - grain as an emotional variation. These variations modify space and carry an immaterial energy named wave and revealed by photography. In that sense, Bruit de fond (Background noise) becomes a collection of more or less stronger disturbances. Bruit de fond questions our senses and our perception. This book questions the notion of photography by proposing to educate one to listening to pictures and looking at noise. The best editorial of the online blog is printed every April and October. The bi-annually printed publication is released bi-annually as an archive for the most interesting editorial from the last six months, in a format that gives the work the respect it deserves. It also creates a platform to share more in-depth, exclusive material including interviews and features focussing on, and created by practitioners from all over the world. Each publication is entirely advertising free. The lineup for issue 4 is incredibly exciting and we have interviews with Nick Knight, Neville Brody, Miranda July, Trokia, RBG6, Noma Bar and Bompas & Parr, features by Sara De Bondt, Adam Buxton, Adrian Shaughnessy, Jez Burrows, Mike Lemanski, Peter Nencini and Micah Lidberg as well as tons of work from the likes of Michael Landy, Rui Teneiro, Peter Grundy and more. -- It´s Nice That Roberto V. LITTLE JOE. A MAGAZINE ABOUT QUEERS AND CINEMA http://nozines.com/contenido/little-joe-magazine-about-queers-and-cinema.asp Tue, 21 Sep 2010 00:00:00 GMT Little Joe is a new zine out of London, "about queers and cinema, mostly". Created by cinephile and movie poster designer Sam Sabih, Little Joe is a new biannual publication looking at film from a different perspective. It is a direct move away from the traditional method of reviewing all current and future releases towards a more selective and eclectic focus on films that inspire alternative discourse. “The first issue—printed on a risograph and handsomely lo-fi—contains, amongst other pleasures, Tom Kalin looking back on the New Queer Cinema, an essay on visionary porn auteur Fred Halsted by William E. Jones, Fritz Haeg discussing adapted E.M. Forster, an extended meditation on bucolic softcore curiosity Song of the Loon, and an appreciation of Raquel Welsh’s thoroughly bewildering Raquel!, which plays like Kenneth Anger orchestrating an epic TV variety hour. The magazine is a kind of heir to both Film Culture and After Dark, and its implicit project is a vital one: mapping the subterranean canon of gay and lesbian cinema, past and present, drawing together its many and varied histories, frequently from the margins of taste and style.” —Light Industry -- Little Joe Roberto V. AA PUBLICATIONS. URBAN INTERVENTIONS & MORE http://nozines.com/contenido/aa-publications-urban-interventionsSQLWD--SQLWDmore.asp Fri, 17 Sep 2010 00:00:00 GMT Adaptive Actions (AA) has been actively creating/generating an online reservoir of urban interventions. In the form of an open invitation, AA operates as a think tank, generating various platforms to induce change in the urban environment. AA Publications Each Adaptive Actions' project is extended and revisited by the making of a publication. Submitted adaptive actions, comments and texts are reunited in one communal art book. New ideas for future actions germ from this process. They have published two books for the time being: Madrid and UK. The Adaptive Action's publication is an interdisciplinary book which explores issues related to architecture and art but also anthropology and sociology. The book's expected readership are people interested in new art, urban architecture and spatial practices, tactics and reflections; persons interested in post-production, urban appropriation, self-management, and creative and singular actions in public spaces. Behind Adaptive Actions is Jean-François Prost, artist-architect. His interest in new urban research territories — neglected, undetermined spaces, and those over-controlled, with no apparent specificity — has brought him to question the city, architecture and urban material in a non-disciplinary way. Prost's work promotes social engagement, defends the presence of ‘art’ everywhere, at any time. -- Adaptive Actions Jean-François Prost Roberto V. PPP APP IPHONE/IPAD http://nozines.com/contenido/ppp-app-iphone-ipad.asp Thu, 09 Sep 2010 00:00:00 GMT Online digital editions of many of the fanzines that most interest us there are many ones or blog way or nominal own site. But their editions as digital mobile application (release apps) are still expected. We find apps of the classic and more conventional magazines on design, architecture and music (also on art, fashion, trends, travel & tourism, gastronomy & food, interior design, decorating, literature, even gardening): this kind of publishing whose sponsors and firms had already been developed to design and program their own apps. Fanzines, comiczines, graphzines have been having an increasing presence on the web –adding the webzines, without precedent or original editions on paper. Photozines may be the most commonly serve as digital editions. Preston is my Paris, a distinctive photozine that Adam Murray and Robert Parkirson launched in July 2oo9, has an app for iPhone/iPad. Its paper edition (you can see here an example for those who don´t know__http://vimeo.com/8852449) publishes the photos and images from different authors around the city and society of Preston. Its web edition__ http://prestonismyparis.blogspot.com, provides information on events, photos, images and contents not included in its paper original edition -addition to the wellknown facility of instant communication and interaction with the remote user. The app for the i~™[] Preston is my Paris [PPP app] adds to previous editions the exact location of the photos, images and contents on the map of Preston, via Google Maps -of course. On these technological advantages for display and diffusions of ~zines i was having a close discussion few days ago with a devoted friend of the paper (and of the "authenticity", as he says.) Do not consider myself a fanatic of technology, not even a half follower of the progress of the same ... Turn a deaf ear to the facilities that digital editions offer us, it seems to me, at least, very little ecological, very little sustainable and all the green and environmental words and attributes I can add to the case of using paper editions (thousands, massive) of publications that we all have at hand. Despite the trite were the theme of sustainable development, we know it… And however much we trust recycling. Rather I am a fanatic of the paper. Fanaticism which needs further (1) time for contemplation and (2) decision (what I´ll take from what I´m seeing, what one is more interesting, I don´t understand a single ideogram Korean but what a nice layout…), and often (3) money… These three conditions for getting paper editions are not always found in the same time and same place. To have digital editions of the vast world of ~zines makes life easier for me, and then I can browse and I can look and look and look. CONTEMPORARY ART, DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE http://nozines.com/contenido/klatSQLWD--SQLWDcontemporary-art-designSQLWD--SQLWDarchitecture.asp Thu, 12 Aug 2010 00:00:00 GMT KLAT is a magazine, from Milano, made up solely of interwiews: long ones, in-depth and the best. A date every three months with key players from the worlds of contemporary art, architecture and design. KLAT #03 presents exclusive interviews to Maarten Baas, Giulio Iacchetti, Florian Idenburg, John Maeda, Markus Miessen, Walter Niedermayr, Richard Sympson, and Oliviero Toscani. "KLAT #03 – explains Paolo Priolo, publisher and editor in chief – is a summer issue, and summer is time for adventures and challenges. There is the world football cup, for sure, but summer was also the time of the legendary robbery that thirty four years ago, between 16 and 19 July 1976, Albert Spaggiari and his gang committed in the Société Générale in Nice: about a one hundred million francs theft without shedding a drop of blood. A great and anomalous challenge, that above all proved to be an extraordinary reconnaissance and transformation of space: a sewer system seen as a promise of happiness, where dreams and money flowed by. So KLAT #03 is an issue that courts challenges and ideas that swim against the tide, transfigured objects and places, and plans that have turned out unexpectedly well. And so we have the carbonized furniture of Maarten Baas, Markus Miessen’s antidemocratic appeal, the stinging thoughts of Oliviero Toscani, Giulio Iacchetti’s dissenting design. And then the anti-hierarchical images of Richard Sympson, the solid imagination of Florian Idenburg, the refrigerated reality of Walter Niedermayr and the disarming simplicity of John Maeda: “Understanding is crucial today”. In issue #03 there is a new section called Blue Chips, like stocks and casino tokens of the highest value. In our case, Blue Chips refers to images with a high aesthetic value, such as those of Corey Arnold, Geert Goiris, Dan Holdsworth, Peter Bialobrzeski, and Armin Linke. Two images per artist.” At its third issue, KLAT presents itself in digital format, to read and page through on iPad, Pc, and Mac. -- Klat Magazine Roberto V. BARRIOBAJERO. The result is a refreshing 16-page self-published fanzine (A6) in black toner print on marble and gradient papers plus a pop up poster in A4 size. Each copy printed on paper of different colors is a perfect refreshing blend to relieve the heat of summer with flat shapes, geometries, delirious found images and a delicious kitsch taste. In their own words: “Barriobajero is an unpredictable collection of images in which every object has its place. In this visual game where the theme is the absurd and the kitsch, the goal is to invent a different story every time. On the first trip outside the network, Barriobajero has been materialized in a small fanzine on marble and gradient papers, found summery images and freshness. You can get it writing an email to hello [at] rjvv [dot] com or from their page online via paypal”. -- Barriobajero Óscar M. [Richard Cámara] [David López] The self-publishing is a medium for free expression of their creators. Spaces on paper, for reflection, review and dissemination of contemporary culture in a search for the perfect integration between content and form. The workshop consisted of different phases through self-released a publication: contents, design, printing and distribution. The ultimate objective was the realization of a physical model that supports content with a definition of  graphic and font family. A conclusion that balances form and content of each publication project in the workshop. [Marian Garrido] [Ana Colmenero] Roberto V. AVALANCHE. 1970-1976 FACSIMILE EDITION http://nozines.com/contenido/avalanche-1970-1976-facsimile-edition.asp Tue, 06 Jul 2010 00:00:00 GMT Avalanche magazine was founded by Willoughby Sharp and Liza Béar shortly after they met in 1968. At the time, Sharp was a New York-based art historian and independent curator and Béar an underground magazine editor who had recently moved to New York from London. They published the first issue in 1970 and collaborated on 13 issues from 1970 to 1976. Avalanche focused on art from the perspective of artists rather than critics, and investigated new forms of art that were developing in the U.S. and Europe with a radical new media format—probing interviews and a visionary design that made extensive use of photography and dynamic layouts. For many artists, publication in Avalanche preceded a one-person gallery or museum show. Aside from an eight to twelve-page news section, the editorial content included only  interviews by Sharp and/or Béar, artists` texts and documents of art and art making, also functioning as an exhibition space in print.  Fresh, incisive and unpretentious, the Avalanche interviews—now landmarks—illuminate the creative process and give clear voice to the specific issues that permeated the era. Among the featured artists were Vito Acconci, Joseph Beuys, Hanne Darboven, Walter De Maria, Jan Dibbets, Philip Glass, Barry Le Va, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Gordon Matta-Clark, Bruce Nauman, Dennis Oppenheim, Yvonne Rainer, Keith Sonnier, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, William Wegman, Lawrence Weiner and Jackie Winsor. The reprint of Avalanche by Primary Information makes the magazine available worldwide as a complete set for the first time in three decades. Originally published in magazine format for the first eight issues, Avalanche switched to newspaper format for the final five issues. This facsimile edition is a boxed set that houses the individual magazine issues and the newspapers bound in a single book form. Primary Information is a non-profit organization devoted to printing artists books, artist writings, out of print publications and editions. Primary Information was founded by James Hoff and Miriam Katzeff, who met while working at Printed Matter, a non-profit artist bookstore in New York. United by their mutual interest in artist publications, they formed Primary Information to foster intergenerational dialogue as well as to aid in the creation of new publications and editions. -- Primary Information Roberto V. HYBRID NOVELS. A NEW WAY OF READING NARRATIVE FICTION http://nozines.com/contenido/hybrid-novels-new-way-of-reading-narrative-fiction.asp Thu, 01 Jul 2010 00:00:00 GMT "Hybrid novels can be seen as image-text hybrids where written text and a number of graphic devices work together in order to hold the readers’ interest, enhancing the book´s interactivity and giving the printed page a multidimensional visual surface. This kind of books require the readers’ actions, they demand to be handled and experienced." That was Alberto Hernández explaining his aim when developing his research on Hybrid Novels. Initiated as his mayor project at London College of Communication, the result is an astonishing new edition of R. L. Stevenson´s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. An exploration of the boundaries of editorial design applied to the same purpose thats been behind all great literary achievement´s from modernism onward: building narrative devices that will pull readers away from the comfortable lazy stance that gets hold of us when things get predictable, forcing us instead to engage with the story, actively participate in the construction of meaning. In this edition of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, all the storys constituents have been dissected by Alberto in search of those vertebral elements that, when expressed graphically within the book, could generate this extended reading experience. His final proposal consists on a slipcase holding 7 booklets that echo the story´s internal structure, main themes and narrative technique as well as the historical and cultural context in which it was written. Take Dr Jekyll´s split identity, for instance. It is expressed even in the slipcase, with its striped pattern interior evoking (à la Saul Bass´ title credits in Psycho) the doctor´s fractured psyche. The booklets all replicate this duality -as well as a number of secondary themes- in their savvy use of graphic design resources such us paper colour, texture and size variation (images signatures are bigger than text signatures and they are both contained within one another such as Jekyll and Hyde are), layout ad hoc changes, page segmentation and type choice. Two typefaces have been used in the book New Caledonia and Grotesque, and both hold a sense of Victorian flavour. Unfortunately book copies are not available, but the complete report can be read online via Issuu. Maria Serrano DE ZINES. The title, instant is come from an old Latin word instans. It means ‘in + stare’, ‘being at hand’. Instant is made by three people who are all taking pictures as a journal in their daily lives. Its first issue is published in March 2010. The first issue is named <Journal to Journey>. All pictures are printed on paper that have films own ratio. Instant is published irregular. And they all hope to communicate by pictures than words. The first issue, is a journal of  three peoples trips: north Indian, Paris and Busan. Firstly, Immimyung´s  “Fragments of the summer” shows calm and tension together by enlarged pictures from one of a vacation spot in north India. And Woosung Sohn presents daily life scenes in Paris. Especially Flaneur jeans a stroller in French. He was trying to be flaneur when he was staying, walking there. So his Flaneur series literally shows flaneur and it´s taken by flaneur. Finally, Bbossing´s (aka Boeun Hwang) “One summer day, we are…” is composed by light and bright pictures of her friends which were taken in Ga-Duk-Do, Busan. -- Instant Roberto V.
